Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya afforestation idea
Local residents and people
visiting the Masai Mara National reserve in Kenya have the chance to contribute
to reforestation by using the seed balls.
Seed balls are the seeds are
encased in a ball of clay or other ingredients, such as biochar, and then
dispersed using a variety of methods. These seed balls can be spread by various
methods like throwing by hand, from helicopter (mostly done tourists or conservationists),
or by the help of animals.
Miyawaki Method to grow a Mini Forest at Urban Home
Kira Miyawaki, a Japanese botanist, invented the Miyawaki
forestation process by which urban forest can be grown within 20 to 30 years rather
than natural 200 to 300 years.
Native plant species are densely
planted in congested areas so that only the tops of the plants receive
sunlight, causing them to expand vertically rather than sideways. As a result,
the plantation becomes 30 times denser, grows 10 times faster, and needs no
maintenance after three years.
The chosen location should
ideally be 4*3 meters in size and receive at least 8 hours of sunlight a day.
Afforestation in Mediterranean Abandoned Farmlands
Most of the Mediterranean
farmlands had been abandoned due to rural depopulation and land abandonment;
hence afforestation of farmlands presents exciting opportunities to establish
forests in previously barren areas.
Although not applicable to all
countries, it would be effective in Mediterranean areas. Moderate afforestation
projects with low-density planting (300 feet/ha) allow for autochthonous plant
colonization and succession.
This concept prioritizes
afforestation in farmlands near native forests or bushes, allowing seeds to
migrate more easily and accelerating vegetal succession. Another way to promote
biodiversity is to introduce afforestation projects in productive agricultural
lands.
