Why should we protect glaciers? & threats of retreating glaciers
Glaciers, as massive freshwater reservoirs, that sustains the planet's life cycles and have an effect on our daily lives. Recent study from many individual scientists and organizations have suggested the loss of glaciers partially or completely since 1900.
Why should we protect glaciers?
1. Source of fresh water
2. Major tourists attraction to make revenue
3. Glaciers melt water provides water for irrigation
4. Hydroelectricity generation from tarns (A lake that form in glacially-carved cirques)
Threats of retreating glaciers
1. Sea level rises, causing coastal erosion and elevates storm surge
2. Affects the freshwater flora and fauna
3. Herbaceous ecosystem (mostly above 3500 altitude)
4. Deteriorates the herbaceous ecosystem (mostly above 3500m altitude)
5. Causes large number of natural disasters
6. Threaten high altitude communities
7. Disappearance of small glaciers cuts water supply to small tows
